Woodland News - July and August 2014

August 2014
Woodland volunteer team from the Associate Audiologist Inc. of Kansas travel to Guatemala from August 11th to 17th.


The team include Dr. Tim Steele, Dr. Dana Jacobson and Dr. Erica Smith.  The team will work at the Education and Health Center in Patanatic, Sololá and will provide medical aid to families of Patanatic and surrounding communities.

The team was able to visit the Del Valle Rotary Club and Rotarian Dana and Tim exchange banner of their respective club with the president of the Del Valle Club Rodolfo Salazar.

July 2014
A team of Woodland Volunteers from Olathe Bible Church, Rotarians from Olathe Noon RC and Shawnee Mission RC are traveling to Guatemala from July 23 to 30, to support the Access to Education, Health and Safe Drinking program that is implemented in Patanatic, Sololá and surrounding areas.


The Woodland Volunteers will focus in the monitoring/evaluation of water filters, provide computer training, English classes, sewing training, nutrition classes (canning) and also will provide a softball camp to students of 5th and 6th grade of the Elementary School of Patanatic.
   
Members of the team are:
Dale and Jane McKemey Wes, Nancy and  Mandi McCoy, Ann and Kate Sutton, Charles, Mindy, Hannah, Morgan and Rosemary Casteel, Kerri, Luke and Beth Fraser, Stephanie Ostrander,  Jorge, Jorge Luis and Juliamaria Coromac.
During the trip the team was able to support the Access to Education, Health and Safe Drinking Water ant to provide 4 cook stoves, 11 beds, a Drama and Softball camp to students of 5th and 6th grade of the Elementary School of Patantic.  The team also visited 85% of the homes of Patanatic with the aim of monitoring/evaluating the use and maintenance of the water filters.

Guatemala Earthquake July 2014
On Sunday July 27th, Woodland Vice President of Programs Jorge Coromac visited the victims of the July 7th earthquake that damage several communities of the Department of San Marcos, Suchitepequez, Quetzaltenango and Sololá Guatemala

In Santa Clara La Laguna of the Sololá Department more than 160 families were affected and at least 42 of them lost completly their house.

Along with Jorge Coromac, Rotarians of the Olathe and Shawnee Mission RC Wes and Mandi McCoy traveled to the area affected and provide humanitarian aid to 27 families.

"We will continue identifying resources to support the families affected for the earthquake and as per the initial visit there is a lot of need for cook stoves, water filters, food, water, medicine and household items because many families lost everything". Commented Jorge Coromac.
